...a place for gathering
...a place for gathering
In 2011 Hillary and Haq were commissioned by the City of Greater Dandenong to create an artwork that would capture the dreams and aspirations of the residents of Noble Park. The work was installed and launched in 2013.

Responding to the project brief from the City of Greater Dandenong, the design of the work is inspired by its context in a new public space. Being located in a small local shopping strip the work reflects the language of commercial signage, the diversity of the community and the desire to create a festive space.

A wide range of groups from the local community were invited to write on a postcard what a place for gathering meant to them. From the many postcards collected words and phrases were selected for the neon text.

Hillary, Haq and Cran attended a range of community forums using the postcards to encourage the Noble Park community to contribute to the project.

Delta Neon were engaged by the artists to fabricate the neon.

A daytime effect is created by coloured vinyl text that sits behind the neon.

The neon work is suspended on catenary wires spanning 16m, between two custom designed street light poles, engineered and fabricated by Vicpole. Kane & Co were responsible for the installation of the street light poles, the sound box and associated electrical works.

Rock Martin were commissioned to fabricate the sound box.

Justin Hutchinson and Joel Wells were commissioned to design the sound box.

Hugo Cran & the Ambients combined music, voices and environmental sounds such as the nearby trains to create an interactive soundscape to the neon text. In this way the community remains an integral and living part of the artwork.
